1) The Last Pig
Get ready to laugh, cry, and feel every emotion in between while watching The Last Pig. Throughout the documentary, you get to know Bob Comis and get insight into his life as a pig farmer. He grew up eating fast food, and as a result, he started pig farming to offer people an alternative to factory farmed meat. Once his pigs are at an ideal weight, he sends them to slaughter. But after years working in close proximity to such incredible, empathetic, and intelligent animals, he decides it’s time for a change. The best part is, this must-watch film is free on Vimeo!

2) Vegan: Everyday Stories
Is your appetite more important than an animal’s suffering? That’s the questions Vegan: Everyday Stories challenges viewers to ask themselves. This documentary follows the lives of four incredibly different people who all have one thing in common — they’re vegan. The documentary challenges us to look at our beliefs — that cultural norm of, we love animals, but we still eat them — and to instead be deliberate about what it is we eat. It certainly breaks down the hippie-dippie stereotype, and the documentary highlights normal people living normal, healthy, and cruelty-free lifestyles. And if you’re a Reverend Run, he makes an appearance, as well!

3) The Cove
Shallow water, deep secret: if you loved Blackfish, you need to watch The Cove. This documentary works to uncover the truth about the dolphin capture trade in Taiji, Japan, and it was the winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
One high-tech dive team uses state-of-the-art techniques (think hidden cameras and microphones in things like clothing and rocks) to uncover the truth about this awful trade. Long story short — dolphins don’t belong in captivity. The documentary is tense throughout as it becomes clear that the filming crew is not wanted. If you enjoy sitting on the edge of your seat, stream The Cove today.

4) Racing Extinction
Change the way you see the world with the help of the thrilling documentary, Racing Extinction. The same people who brought us The Cove are behind this film, another note-worthy movie highlighting the demise of planet Earth for many reasons, including the consumption of meat.
This team of scientists, activists, and even a race car driver showcase the extinction of species as a result of human behaviour. The film highlights this and more using state-of-the-art equipment which showcases why we should be actively working to offset our consumption of oil and gas amongst other things.

5) Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead
Joe Cross takes viewers on his 60-day juice fasting journey through the U.S. in the film Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead. This Aussie addresses our emotional attachment to food, and we as viewers have the rare opportunity to watch Cross transform his life and change the world, starting with himself.
While the documentary isn’t necessarily a vegan film, if you will, it certainly becomes clear that living a plant-based life aided Cross in losing 100 pounds AND resulted in him being able to discontinue taking all of his medications throughout the course of filming. Whether you’ve just begun your plant-based lifestyle or need validation of the one you’re living, this is the film to watch. The best part is, this film is not only unconventional but uplifting — and we all could use a little positivity in our lives right now.
