Myth: Being vegan is expensive

Fact: The basic staples of a vegan diet—whole grains, rice, veggies, and fruit are usually affordable, especially compared with the price of meat and fish.

Veganism can be as affordable or expensive as any other way of eating. It is possible to eat a healthy, vegan diet on a budget by choosing whole, unprocessed foods and making meals at home.

Myth: Vegans don’t get enough protein

Fact: Vegans can find plant-based protein almost anywhere, from oats, to beans, to lentils to nuts and seeds.

Myth: Being vegan is restrictive

Fact: It’s understandable that if you’ve eaten animal products your entire life, it may seem like you have nothing left if you remove them. However, veganism can offer incredible variety, especially when paired with new flavours, spices and cooking methods.

Myth: Veganism only applies to food

Fact: While veganism is widely linked to food consumption, it is not limited to it - generally, vegans avoid any product tested on animals, or that contain traces of animal sources (e.g. fur or leather).

Myth: Veganism leads to malnutrition or isn’t healthy

Fact: As in any diet, veganism requires balance and attention to retaining all important elements for a healthy lifestyle. A well-balanced vegan diet can be healthy and nutritionally complete, and is proven to strengthen the immune system, improve heart function, increase stamina, and provide healthier skin.

Vegans can get all the nutrients they need by consuming a variety of plant-based foods, including sources of protein, iron, calcium, and other essential nutrients.

Myth: Veganism is difficult to stick to

Fact: Veganism can be easy to follow with some planning and preparation. There are many vegan options available at restaurants and grocery stores, and there are also many vegan recipe resources available online.

Myth: Veganism is a fad or trend

Fact: Veganism has been around for decades and is a legitimate lifestyle choice for many people. It is a way of living that seeks to exclude, as far as possible and practical, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose.

Myth: Veganism is too extreme

Fact: Veganism is a personal choice that is made for various reasons, including health, environmental concerns, animal welfare, and social justice. It is a way of living that seeks to minimise harm and promote compassion and respect for all beings.
